Centre for Environmental Studies was established in the year 2000 functioning under the administrative control of Forest & Environment Department, Govt. of Odisha. CES undertakes activities to promote environmental education, awareness, training, research; building environment information database; dissemination of environmental knowledge through newsletters, books, booklets, posters, leaflets, video clips; certificate courses under Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) etc.
CES is the State Nodal Agency for National Green Corps (Eco-club Programme). Under this programme, there are 14,250 Eco-clubs functioning in the State mostly in schools & colleges. Out of which 2000 eco-clubs are sponsored by the State Government. These eco-clubs are mainly involved in carrying out both awareness & action based activities related to environment throughout the year. Besides, some unique programmes like “Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE); Plastic Free School; Swachhta Action Plan; Beach Cleaning Programme; ODF Awareness; Plantation Drives; Waste Utilisation etc. are also included in eco-club programme.
CES is the Nodal Agency for creating awareness on Curbing Single-use Plastic as per rules and order of the State Government in all districts.
CES is the State Nodal Agency for Energy Club Programme with the support of Energy Department, Government of Odisha. Under this programme, 1000 Energy Clubs are functioning in the state.
GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) programme has launched under National Green Corps (NGC) in India and Odisha State has been selected by the Ministry in the Eastern Zone. GLOBE is a science and education program that connects a network of students, teachers and scientists from around the world to better understand, sustain and improve Earth’s environment at local, regional and global scales. Under GLOBE Programme, 150 eco-clubs have been enrolled who are collecting and uploading primary data on atmosphere, hydrosphere, land use & soil in the given portal supporting the vision on working together to better understand, sustain, and improve Earth’s Environment at local, regional and global scales.
CES is the State Hub of Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Programme of MoEF&CC, Govt. of India. Under this program, CES is collecting time series information relating to environment of the State for dissemination to the public. Time series information on environment related subjects are being uploaded in ENVIS website for users. CES is compiling newsletters, booklets & knowledge products on environmental issues of the state which are being distributed among various users & stakeholders. 68 nos. of newsletter have been published so far.
CES is conducting certificate courses under Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) under ENVIS Programme of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Govt. of India. Under this programme, CES has conducted five certificate courses namely “Eco-tourism”; “Para-taxonomy including PBR”; “Environment Impact Assessment”; “Waste Management” and “ETP/STP/CETP Operation & Maintenance” since 2018-19.
CES is conducting various research activities using its well equipped laboratory. CES has conducted two no. of research projects on climate change support by Govt. of Odisha and one major research project supported by DST, Govt. of India. This year CES has submitted two major research proposals on FANI affected coastal shelter belt to DST & MoEF&CC, GoI.
CES is the Nodal Agency for conducting World Environment Day Programme of Forest, Environment & CC Department, Govt. of Odisha. CES organizes State level function at State Capital Bhubaneswar on the occasion of World Environment Day every year and facilitates Prakruti Mitra awards to voluntary organizations/ educational institutions and Prakruti Bandhu awards to individuals working in the field of environment for outstanding contribution in promotion of environment conservation & protection in the State Odisha.
CES is the Nodal Agency for conducting Energy Conservation Day Programme of Energy Department, Govt. of Odisha. CES is organizing various Block level activities on energy conservation for the celebration of National Energy Conservation Day. Winners have been awarded in State level function at Bhubaneswar on 14th of December. About 50,000 students are participating in Block level written quiz competition.
CES is conducting various Workshops / Training programme on different issues of environment for different target groups in frequent intervals.
CES is observing of important days related to environment like World Earth Day, World Environment Day, Vana-Mahotsava Week, Wildlife Week, World Ozone Day, Coastal Clean-up Day, Wildlife Week, Energy Conservation Day etc.
CES published various books/ booklets/ posters/ leaflets on Environment Education; Biodiversity Conservation; Wildlife in India; Climate Change Issues; Coastal Erosion Issues; Energy Conservation & Management etc.
